iPod touch e-mail and CenturyTel ISP

I use the above ISP and the incoming/outgoing servers they gave me with no problems on our Macs. I set up the Touch with those servers and get "read 24 new messages" in the Inbox, along with the "2,147,483,646 total unread messages". Apple was no help and CenturyTel was not either. It sends/receives fine, just this other message in the inbox. It is a POP server. Thanks.
