E-Mail Pictures Become 'cookies' When Saved To Desktop

Hey,

I just got an e-mail from my neighbor who having problems with his Mac and mail application... I think he uses Eudora. Anyway all the e-mail said was:

"Can you help me? I am losing picture attachments when I transfer emails to a desktop folder. They end up as broken 'cookies'."

I have no idea how to help him. I use Mail (mac), and I thought it would just be the same, but I don't even know where to start.
