E-mail Threads in Lion Mail

I am trying to see if I can switch from the web-based version of g-mail to lion's mail app. I like how the new mail app groups your conversations into threads like g-mail, however it doesn't include your sent responses in those threads like g-mail does.

Does anyone know if there is a way to get Mail to do this?

Also, how to I stop it from downloading all the messages in my g-mail account which date back at least 5 years?

Hit the "show related messages" button on the toolbar. If you want to make it permanent then set it in the settings > viewing > include related messages. However this does not do it specifically for sent messages but for every message that is related to it.
