EA has announced a new free-to-play version of The Sims is coming to iPhone and iPad, six years after The Sims Freeplay - a simplified version of the original - launched on the mobile platform.

Called The Sims Mobile, the game looks like it will be the closest mobile approximation yet of the hit franchise, being based on The Sims 4 "legacy challenge" mode, in which players build and maintain a family across generations according to a set of self-imposed rules.

Like other games in the franchise, players will guide sims through life, establishing relationships, building homes, advancing through careers, and conquering goals.

Not much else has been revealed about the title beyond the fact that it will feature social elements, allowing players to become "virtual" best friends with their real-life friends. But the trailer for the game does show that it will include classic Sims mechanics, allowing players to design their characters and customize their home.

The Sims 4 on Mac and PC continues to have a healthy fanbase. Yesterday EA revealed that the game's number of monthly active users jumped 33 percent year on year.

The Sims Mobile for both iOS and Android launches in Brazil today and should start rolling out globally soon after.

A full featured Sims game on an iPad/iPhone is not practical without a keyboard.

You realize that less than 10% of iPad owners ever have an iPad keyboard? That's a tiny niche of customers that EA will not bother with.

Been playing Sims since TS2. Agooblah, nooboo nooboos!

If it's anything like their latest SimCity for iOS, expect a freemium model that loses its lustre after about 20 minutes of gameplay when you have to spend money or wait hours for the materials necessary to continue.

So it's like a simulated version of the full games? They should have called it 'Sim The Sims'.

Definitely freemium trashware, the screenshot shows an icon for simoleons and your typical "green stack of money" icon for in-game purchases like any other EA mobile game.

"Free to play". Ugh. For anyone interested, EA seems to give away The Sims 2 complete collection for free every now and then on Origin. Definitely worth looking out for.

can i just get the full version of one of the real "the sims" game? would gladly pay $20.
No. We don't want your measly $20. We want your much more substantial $100's of dollars. You won't even miss it because we'll take it a little at a time. -EA & most every other mobile game maker.

I disagree I think the game could easily be played with touch controls

It's 100% freemium. Sim players on the PC are really upset with EA over this game. The fact that they had to pay for all the expansions and this mobile game is giving out the packs for free with new items that aren't even in the pc version. It's upsetting the entire Sims community. And the fact that they've been making this crap instead of what they should be doing (making MORE Sims 4 expansion packs.) This is just a game that no one asked for.

I would rather see full scale Sim City on iPad.

Not freemium or in-app purchases but pay up front, but this won't happen, certainly not with EA!
