It seems the general consensus with early 2008 macbook is to stick with snow leopard as there are issues with page outs and sluggish performance with snow leopard. But I really want to run Lion on my macbook as I already have a 2012 Mini with Mountain Lion. I also love the multitouch gestures. My macbook currently has 3gb of ram, but I can swap out a stick to give it 4gb, and I have several SSD's laying around that need new homes.

It should definitely run faster with SSD disk and more RAM memory. However, try it out yourself and post results for future reference.

I have a Late 2008 2.4GHz MacBook Unibody (128GB Samsung 830 SSD, 4GB RAM) with Mountain Lion and besides getting a little hot, it runs just fine. For some reason the fans don't spin up as quickly on 10.8 (smcFanControl set to 2800 solves this).

As long as you don't do anything graphics intensive, you should be ok with your Early 2008 (Scrolling might be a bit laggy though).
