what do you make of this?

a few flickers a few weeks back and now this.

I've read elsewhere:
Looks like your 8600 died. Bring this in with you for reference: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2377

"If the NVIDIA graphics processor in your MacBook Pro has failed, or fails within three years of the original date of purchase, a repair will be done free of charge, even if your MacBook Pro is out of warranty."


Notebook is early 08 and so over 3 years and thus out of extended warranty.
would Apple fix this after that amount of time if indeed this is the fault?

Its 4 years now. It looks like you video card failed
