It says there are 2 cores on the sandy disk chip on some sites.... But never really says dual core...
how is it different than the current dual core i7 with 2.8 CPU freq

My 2011 still seems pretty legit
8 gb ram
500 gb ssd Evo 840
2.7 i7 CPU

I just got the ssd, so I plan on keeping this guy for a couple more years hopefully

Nearly every Intel Mac ever sold has at least a dual core processor. The only exception being one of the earlier Mac Mini models which had a 1.5GHz Core Solo processor.

To answer your question, yes your MBP has a dual core processor.

Download Mactracker from MAS. It has tons of information on every Mac.

Unless I'm missing something, the OP doesn't state whether this is a 13 or 15" model.

13" = dual core
15" = quad core
Both with hyperthreading.

You can deduce from the information provided what model it is. The only 2011 model to use a 2.7 GHz i7 processor is the 13-inch, which is dual-core.
