I have an early 2011 MBP that was working perfectly. I bought a Mac Mini, so the notebook has been unplugged and unused for probably 6 months. I decided to sell it, so I plugged it in so I could wipe it. The whole thing is operating SUPER slow. Everything I do, trying to bring up a menu, move an icon, anything takes a really long time to happen. The battery shows 0% and there is a message that it is not charging. if I unplug the power cable, it immediately shuts off. This is a 3rd party battery that I bought off Amazon a couple years ago and it has worked fine. Does letting it fully drain brick it or something which in turn affects system performance?

I tried zapping PRAM a few times but it didn't solve anything.

The 6 months of inactivity probably made the battery unable to hold a charge. Li ion batteries last longest when they are used or charged periodically. Sitting around for half a year without any electrons moving likely destroyed whatever capacity the battery had left prior to storage.

The sluggishness may be due to throttling caused by the dead battery. I don't have first hand knowledge of this but a recent discussion here talked about how Apple laptops will always operate if connected to a charger, even if the battery is removed. But the system is deliberately slowed down, perhaps to avoid sudden shutdowns if power demand surges.
