Early 2015 MacBook Air dark screen

When I start my early 2015 13-inch MacBook Air the screen is dark. I hear the start up gong and the keyboard keys light up. Initially, when I hooked up an external monitor nothing showed on it. After performing a NVRAM and SMC reset I can see my cursor on the external monitor but the background is fuzzy. Still nothing on the laptop screen. Is this a motherboard issue?

Any suggestions on what the problem might be is appreciated.
