Hey folks. So, question about some power cables. Sorry if this has come up before, I searched the forum for an answer but couldn't find anything specific. If I missed something you can totally just post a link to the relevant thread.

On my old 2010 MacBook, the power adapter was in great shape, but I've noticed that later MagSafe 2 machines the cable gets yellowed and starts falling apart (most machines for sale in my area are like this). My machine, so far, isn't. Cable is a little dirty but it's not broken down yet. I always make sure to lay the cable straight out from the machine, I don't bend it at all if I can help it (I've added a hook to my lap desk to hold the cord in place).

Do you know what it is about these cables that makes them wear down? Is there something I can do to prolong the life of the rubber on my adapter? Or is it inevitable that it's going to become a mottled mess and I should start saving for a new one? I would like to keep this machine at least a few more years.

Thanks!

Mostly environmental factors. Moisture, heat, dirt, etc. Also the more you lug the cord around, wrap it, etc, puts more wear on the coating. Think of it as a paper clip, the more you bend it back and forth, eventually it’ll snap. Obviously the MagSafe cords are more flexible, but you get the point
