Early Powermac G5 - 20" studio monitor woes!

Hi guys,

I have been given an early G5 Powermac (one Ethernet port). I bought a 20" cinema monitor to use but since realised that the port on the current card in the unit is DVI.

Aside from the very expensive DVI to ADC converter, could I just buy a new AGP graph card like the NVidia GX5200 with ADC or are there issues with that? Or are there better cards to be had instead?

All PowerMac G5's have one Ethernet port built in. You got an acrylic Apple Studio display for it? You could put in a G5 ADC capable video card, as long as you have a G5 that is not a late-2005. Those cannot use an ADC screen without an adapter.

Ah right - I read somewhere that the early g5s only had 1 port?!
Yep - acrylic monitor. So I can just get a new ADC card then I guess if it's pre 2005? Any suggestions as to what will fit and be worth buying?

First double check that you have a non-late-2005 G5. Open the side of it and look at the slot where the video card is plugged in. If it is a APG slot, you can put an ADC video card into it.

Some of the better cards go for about $150 on eBay. These include the ATI X800 and X850. The slowest card that is still G5 ADC compatible is the NVIDIA GeForceFX 5200. Some in the middle cards include the ATI Radeon 9600 XT, Radeon 9600 Pro, Radeon 9800 Pro, and Radeon 9800 XT. Those most of the cards that are compatible with a G5 and have an ADC port. Make sure you get an OEM Apple one or one that is a Mac edition. Do not get a flashed PC one.

This one is not the correct thing. This plugs into a PowerMac's ADC port and turns the ADC port into a DVI port. You need an DVI to ADC adapter that has a power supply because the screen needs a source of power.

You're right. Guess I haven't been paying attention too well.
