Earpods button not working as expected

I have an iPhone 5 16gb black. When I continue to hold down the volume button on ear pods, the volume should continue to increase but it only increase by one bar no matter i continue holding it for more than 10 seconds

Is this a defect or the earpods are designed in this way only??

Mine do the same thing. I think they are designed this way.

had a talk with apple online chat support and they are saying that it is a defect.

It should work in the same way as the volume buttons on the phone work (if pressed once, one volume bar increases and if the button is held down for a long time, the volume should increase gradually...)
