EarPods Lightning freeze problem

Hi!

I've got the new EarPods Lightning headphones. I'm using them with my iPhone 5s and iPad Air (gen 1). However, the remote control keeps freezing. It becomes unresponsive – can't change volume, tracks or answer calls.

Is anyone else having this problem? Apple allegedly fixed the bug on iPhone 7. However, older devices are still affected.
