Student should work fine assuming you are actually a student. Follow the guides at http://www.winsupersite.com/win7/clean_install_upgrade_media.asp to work around the fact that it is sn upgrade package. If it comes as an exe you may also have to get an ISO from some other site. Follow the links here: http://www.winsupersite.com/win7/clean_install_upgrade_media.asp

Just know that since you are bending the license a bit, Microsoft is within their rights to deactivate you should they choose to.

I think I have an old copy of Windows XP for my last custom built computer still laying around somewhere, could I just buy the student update upon that? and yeah, real student so no problems there.

Probably, but the licensing details are so complex (was it retail or OEM, etc...) that it really pretty much ends up being based on the honor system.

You don't need to install Vista or XP to install 7 from upgrade media is the bottom line.

Ok, so no matter what kind of XP it was, it will work? Alright.
