Easiest way to make .wav files using macbook & digital input?

I need to make some wav files from tracks recorded on a DAT (digital audio tape) player.

The DAT player has a digital out that I need to utilize.

Would I be able to connect that digital output, to the 1/8" digital in on an intel macbook and then record the tracks in garageband and save them as wav files?

The optical jack on the macbook is for output only. No optical input. You will have to buy a USB or Firewire audio interface that has S/PDIF input. Prices for these are about $150 and up. More expensive then you'd like because the box has several inputs and outputs you may not need. But if you are working with audio, you will eventually.
