Easy and free application to design an avatar?

I'm looking to make my own "Steal Your Face" logo incorporating a Baltimore Oriole in the middle where the lightning bolt would be. Any ideas. Thanks all.

Try Pixelmator's free trial, or you could go with the GIMP. The latter is free but has a bigger learning curve and requires X11, which is probably on your install disc.

The Pixelmator trial would best overall; not permanent but it's incredibly easy to use.
