Easy Desk Top Publishing

My son has a project and to make it looker nicer than a cut and paste (real paste!) job he's asking about MS desk top publisher. Is there a simple, maybe free similar program he can use on my macbook?

Pages is a decent program for document layout type stuff - really basic though.
