We are getting a brand new iMac currently on its way, the new 27 inch 2020 iMac! While we wait we've also been trying to research a new printer, we've had this old Brother model since 2013 and it's been having nothing but technical issues over the last year so we figured to buy a new one since it's about to crap the bed and on and off doesn't work (it's a Brother MFC-J4510DW)

We don't need anything fancy or super expensive, just a nice, modern & easy to use printer compatible with the new iMac that's user friendly. As long as it can scan and print, and not super big (around the size of the current printer we have)

Are there any particular recommendations?

I like Brother MFCs with my iMac. Is the one you have too old for AirPrint?
It can't even scan anything normally on the actual printer anymore, we have to use Image Capture instead. Sometimes it just doesn't want to print at all and it just wastes ink cleaning itself. We can print documents from our phone if that's what you mean, but it's been shutting off randomly so it's dying in general it seems

I hadn't seen that it was an inkjet. My experience has only been with the lasers, but they've been pretty reliable. AirPrint is great.

I did give up on the Brother scanning software and use VueScan instead for scanning. It may have improved; I haven't tried in a while when VueScan works so well.

Yep you want a low cost networked laser printer! A plus with networked printers is if it has an IP then you can get into it via it wiki server! Even many so-called experts don’t even know this simple trick!

IF you don't need color, a B&W laser (with scan/copy functions) should do.

If you do need color, but don't need "inkjet quality", then there are color multifunction printers. The output will not match that of an inkjet, but they're getting better.

I'd suggest Brother. Had good experience with them.
