I know that lack of push is one of the complaints for these apps, but here is the relatively easy solution:

All that you need is any of the free texting apps (I use Text Free) that gives you an email that people can also use for texting (e.g. username@textfree.com) and your Gmail (which I assume everyone using Google Voice has). All you have to do is this:

1) Within GV – check the box in Settings to forward all SMS and voicemail transcriptions to your Google Account

2) Create a filter in Gmail to look for ‘SMS’ or ‘voicemail’ in the subject line (I have one filter setup for each, I’m not sure if you can do it in a single filter)

3) For all messages that get caught by the filter, Skip the Inbox, forward it to username@textfree.com, then Delete it

Now whenever I get a text or voicemail from Google voice, it gets routed to my username@textfree.com and that app gives me the pop-up notification just like you get when anybody sends you a text to your actual iPhone number – simply click close, open GV Mobile+ and away I go responding to the text or listening to the voicemail. This removes the need to give your Google Account info to a third party, which is the holdback on implementing push.
