With the right tools, it's very easy to change the serial number and bypass Activation Lock on T2-based MacBooks (2018-2020).

These repaired computers obviously won't have a warranty, but are usually past the 1-year term anyway. I've not heard of any risks from this procedure. It's a personal decision, but these tools have saved a lot of MacBooks from becoming e-waste due to the Lock.

Will I be able to get OS updates and security updates on this laptop if I keep it in this state/account, without using the tools you mentioned?

Currently it's logged out of icloud.

If there a PM facility where I can chat please let me know.

Yes, everything functions normally. The serial is just not in Apple’s database.

The hardware and software tools exploit a security weakness in the T2 chip and the fix is permanent.

I attempted to use the Erase Assistant and it says 'Set Secure Boot to Full Security'.

So, haven't done it.

Let know if there is a PM or email I can talk to you.

Hi, would you be able to point me in the right direction to do this please? I am in much the same situation as OP is and wish to change the serial number of this mac.

You can search for T203 tools.

Found out later that the keyboard backlight wasn't working.

Returned it.
