I know, I know. 1) It's 2011; why are you using dial-up? 2) Why didn't you just get an Apple modem for $30 and save yourself the trouble? 3) WHAT ARE YOU THINKING?
Those replies aside, I've purchased a USB modem from eBay seller yourdiscount_2008 (99.2% rating with 18470 ratings!) for $11 shipped. Its title?
USB 56Kbps External Voice Fax Data Modem Vista Win7 Mac
I messaged to ask if it would really work with a Mac. Answer?
What the heck, $11. Let's see.
First, OS X recognizes it's a modem and asks for a number and everything.
I try it. "Connecting" "Disconnecting" That's about it. I get one of two error messages.
"An error occurred with the modem. Try reconnecting. If the problem continues, verify your settings and contact your Administrator."
--or, with a much longer wait time--
"A connection could not be established to the PPP server. Try reconnecting. If the problem continues, verify your settings and contact your Administrator."
I really like the way Administrator is capitalized.
I've got the Advanced >>> Modem >>> Sound setting on "On". I don't hear any good modem wails.
There are two lights on the modem. One lights when you plug it in. The other lights when you try to connect.
On Windows, it works beautifully, which I figured it would, so it's not a complete loss either way. But it'd be mas cooler to have dial-up on your OS X machine for $11.
Any ideas? Anyone got a cheap-o modem that works on OS X? Maybe in an earlier version than 10.6?
And the answers to the initial questions are:
1) Because I vacation yearly in an area that doesn't have broadband and is out of range of cell towers, and you can get dial-up for $5/mth. Also because my Toughbook with modem is getting long in the tooth.
2) Because $11 is enough less than $30 that I was seduced by the risk into buying.
3) When's the last time you watched TV on a black and white portable with a converter box in Starbucks?
AWESOMEZ. Hooking up an Intel MacBook to dial-up via a generic modem is similar, I think. NEARLY AS AWESOMEZ.

The technical just confirmed us that the modem needs no driver for Mac PCs.
