i have turned the edge setting to off in my new phone (it shows the small circle in the top left hand corner) and there is no available wireless yet when i open itunes, app store and stock applications it is still downloading and displaying new information

... is there anyway of stopping this all together?? thanks:confused:

First it doesn't sound like you were on Edge, but GRPS.

The phone uses in oder of prefference Wifi > 3G> Edge (an E icon)> GRPS (the small circle icon)

You can turn off Wifi and 3G but not the other two, which your phone will use to excange data if wifi and 3g is off.

(Unless you go to airplane mode, but then you won't get calls either.)
