Now that att has announced their HSPA+ and LTE networks when are we gonna see the EDGE towers get switched over to 3G? its kinda ridiculous this hasnt happened yet.

It's not a good idea to use the term "EDGE" in this way.

2G is the correct terminology.

As for an answer to your question, there are simply far too many 2G only phones in the world. Most people don't have a smartphone with 3G or better on it.

AT&T is still selling 2G phones.
 
i just went to ATT's website, I would say about 90% of the phones are 3G. Why cant the tower have both 3G and 2G? I'm pretty sure when im in my basement I cant get 3G and it switches me to EDGE.

Cost is a real issue. Larger markets will get upgraded first. As is getting permission to make changes to the "towers" from local government.

In some places it may be difficult fitting everything into the available frequencies.
