So I get full bars almost always with edge, and only 2 on 3G most of the times it switches to edge cause it gets so bad.

Now on my 3gs I would get full bars 3g at most places the iPhone 4 gets next to none.

The new ATT system for measuring strength had nothing to do with this. It was the same before 4.0.1

Im noticing the same.
Even though I dont have any problems with dropped calls or slow data the 3G bars show low compared to full signal 3G on my 3GS in the same area.
But edge is always full bars.
Weird....

They changed the way they calculate the cell signal in 4.0.1 and higher. When you used to get full bars with the iPhone 3GS, it was giving you a false signal when it should have said 3 or 4 bars.

Hope this helps.

Interesting. But then how come a Nokia & BB in the same place get full 3G. Are they calculating the signals wrong too?

you cannot compare signal strength on different brands of phones or even on different versions of software on the same phone as they all calculate and display the strength differently.
