"Edit" function can reveal if the text has been read?

I'm pretty sure if a person has read/viewed your text the "edit" function goes away, which kind of defeats the purpose of having read receipts turned off. Am I correct on this? Seems this is an oversight on Apple's part.

No... You have 15 minutes to edit the message, then it goes away. I've edited message before when I know they've already read it.
