Editing a file after using TiVO Transfer

I recorded a newscast on my TVO, and used TiVO Transfer to get it onto my computer. Worked like a charm. Now, I want to edit that newscast so that only a few clips remain. iMovie won't accept the file type (don't really know what it is). Used FFMPEG Streamclip to convert to MPEG-4 so that it would go into iMovie, and it does, but there is nothing there. iMovie shows the time length, and all, but the panes are greyed out and there is no sound.

So, the question is, does anyone know a workflow to do what I want to do?
