Editing HVR V1U True Progressive Footage in Low Res.

Hi guys,

I've been trying to edit 24 frames 1080 true progressive from a SONY HRV V1U, and my Final Cut Express on Mac Book Pro just isn't handling the file sizes of 1 Gig per minute.

So, I'm wondering if it's possible to do this by converting the files to low res - then doing the edit, then transfering the EDL back to the original resolution once I've finished editing?

Final Cut's compressor isn't handling these big files either. Is there a stand alone compressor I should be using?

What's the solution for this?

Sorry CORRECTION: I am using Final Cut Pro, not express.

Also, a few details that may help you resolve this problem...

We captured as PRoRes
We recorded on HDV tape
and then captured it on disk
And we are using an external hard drive.

We shot on 24 frames, progressive mode...
And for importing/capturing it on Final Cut, there was a special option to capture progressive data... Apple ProRes 422

Basically I just want to edit this downcompressed... and once I have done the edit.. I want to link the edit back to the uncompressed footage. If you know of anything that can help me with this (perhaps even a link to a tutorial), pls do let me know.
