To make a long story short, I had to resync my entire photo library saved to dropbox back to my camera. I was VERY happy to have this backup but what I realized later is that dropbox thinks these are all new pictures and wants to back them ALL up again (almost 7000 pictures). Another issue I've recently noticed w/ Dropbox camera uploads is that it's not uploading the edited version, which will be even more important now that we have photo extensions and can edit photos directly in a 3rd party app.
So, I turned off dropbox auto upload and looked for a new solution. Found it in an IFTTT recipe. It automatically saves all of my new iphone photos to my dropbox camera uploads folder (and does NOT go back and reupload the old pictures). This is a perfect solution. Not only that, it also SAVES THE EDITED PHOTO, which I really like.
So I did a test. Took two pictures of the same thing and edited one of them right in the photos app (made it b&w). Went to IFTTT app, saw the recipe triggered twice and saw that one color & one b&w photo was saved to dropbox! Seemed I got everything I wanted... until I went to dropbox and saw that the color photo was properly showing as an October photo and the b&w one was moved to no date. In general I wouldn't care, but in the event I have to restore those photos (again) my dates will be all screwed up.
Has anyone else noticed that the metadata is changed once a photo is edited right in the photo app?
