editing songs

this is what im trying to do.

a have a few songs, and what i want to do i make a mash up of those few songs, but in a way that i have full control of what part of the songs that i want to use. is that possible? i tried garageband and it doesnt seem to work that well.

If you're talking about "extracting" only a vocal track from a song (or similarly, an instrument) that is almost impossible. Garageband can do a lot, but it might take more work than using a dedicated sampler. Having "full control of what part of the songs" you use could be done by importing a song to a new track and chopping it up (split track), then setting the lengths.

If you want to mashup songs, use audacity. It's extremely powerful and I've used it multiple times for this purpose. I recommend you get the new beta version from the site, as it works better than the stable version.
