I know that FCS Student Edition wasn't upgradeable, but I can't find anything indicating that if I bought FCS2 Student Edition that I couldn't upgrade it? Anyone have a definitive answer on this?

Apple just have it as policy with any of their software. If it's retail, it can be upgraded. NFR or EDU software can't.

Plus, FCS2 is cheaper on UK EDU than FCS1 was, so why complain? ;)

While this applies to upgrading TO FCS2, with rare exception, it has long been Apple's policy that Academic versions are not upgradable.

From Apple's FCS 2 webpage:

"The upgrade version requires a valid serial number from a commercial version of Final Cut Studio, Production Suite, or Final Cut Pro 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5. Academic and not-for-resale versions are not eligible for this upgrade."
