Educational software vs regular retail?

What is the difference between the two, if any?

I am thinking about buying an educational version of Adobe Lightroom on Ebay from an individual. It's a good opportunity to take advantage of the program for a good price but I wonder if it is crippled in any way...?

It depends on the licensor, really, for what usage restrictions you may have. Many educational licenses forbid commercial use of documents generated with the program in question.

Note sure about Lightroom in particular but educational version are often not eligible for upgrades forcing another full price purchase to get the next version.
