Long story short, I want to increase my home WiFi speed.
Last week, U-verse “upgraded” my internet speed from 24 mbs to 100 mbs. The wired connections to my iMac and Apple TV achieve around 85-95mbs which is great. However, the WiFi speed is about half of what I got previously under the 24 mbs plan (now, it’s 10 mbs near the router and 4 mbs in a bedroom with a WiFi extender under the “faster” plan).
AT&T did not replace the Arris NVG589 router or modem with a newer model (they say that there would be an additional charge and that it’s unlikely to make a difference, regardless), and this one only supports the 2.4ghz spectrum. After a bit of research, it sounded like I need to purchase my own router because AT&T equipment is generally not very good, so I got an eero home system.
I installed the eero system with 2 beacons, and it works pretty well. I followed eero’s instructions regarding turning off the U-verse WiFi and putting the system in bridge mode. I’m consistently getting about 50-70 mbs speed while connected to the base unit and about 36 mbs connected to the beacons in other rooms on my iPad Pro 10.5 and on a Galaxy Note 8.
On my iPhone X, however, I’m only getting about 20 mbs at best even connected to the base unit. I’ve tried restarting the system, removing the eero units and setting them up again from scratch, and even going from iOS 11.4.1 to the 12 beta (i know: it’s a beta, but I thought it’d be worth a shot. My iPad is on the 12 beta, and it’s getting much better WiFi speed even while connected to the beacons). My iPhone is a sim free version with the Qualcomm modem (not sure if that matters), and I’m on AT&Ts cellular network.
Any ideas as to why my iPhone X won’t get similar speeds to the Note or the iPad? I’d appreciate any recommendations. My house is a square shaped structure with about 3,500 square feet with a single upstairs room (not terribly concerned about coverage up there yet, but the beacon is providing similar 20 mbs performance up there).
I’m also thinking about replacing the eero Home with the eero Pro to have 3 base units connected to Ethernet rather than the 2 beacons in the other rooms to see if I can get 50-ish mbs rather than the 20 mbs in other parts of the house. Should I typically expect a performance increase with such a configuration? I know there are many variables, but I’m wondering if it’s worth a try.
Any help is much appreciated.
