Efficient way to take notes on a MacBook? Taking notes on a PDF file?

I'm looking for a simple (low power consuming and low processor intensive) program that allows me to take notes easily during class. The professor puts all his note outlines on the internet, and encourages us to print them out to take additional notes on. It would be much easier to do it with my computer. I couldn't use the Preview type tool, and PhotoShop is very inefficient - it opens every page in a different window and runs in Rosetta, consuming power fast.

Also, any other suggestions for a general note taking application - if I wanted to start from scratch?

Ok, so omnioutliner is pretty good for note taking, but how about for simply inserting text into a pdf file? See, the pdf file has preliminary notes, and I would like to be able to easily view the pdf document and add additional notes as I please. Any idea for that kind of thing?

Adobe Acrobat would seem to be a fairly gimme choice... The full version, not the Reader.

I second that. It's not that hard to do

yeah, adobe acrobat 8 (not reader) is universal version now. its good, but not free..

Have you tried using the annotate tool in Preview and then saving the PDF before you close. Then when you re open the annotations are there.

There's also formulate, but it's probably unweildy to use to take notes.

ETA: Formulate is a very basic, free software to add text to PDFs.

You know, Pages can export in PDF. 'Might not be the optimal note taking program but it'll probably get done what you need to.
