has anyone made a hackingtosh with one of the new motherboards that have efi rather then bios on them?

i'm looking to make one out of my powermac g5 but i'm unsure what motherboard to get, i mean it the efi boards work i imagine they will work a lot better.

didnt know where to post this, sorry

The CPUs aren't available yet so it's impossible to say. Your best bet is to follow Hackintosh forums such as InsanelyMac and TonyMacx86, here is one SB thread

I used to have an EFI motherboard I ran OS X on. Still not compatible. Sorry. You'd still need to hack it.

Apple wasn't that stupid. OS X is still locked to Apple specific EFI boards.

what do you mean the cpus aren't available yet?

so it is doable? really don't want to have to deal with bios if i can avoid it.

It doesn't matter whether you use EFI or BIOS. It has no impact on loading Mac OS X. You still have to use the same hacks.

Likely putting on OS X will kick the board into BIOS emulation anyway.

So it really doesn't matter. Either way, you'll be running BIOS. Either inside EFI or alone.

It's not really that big of a deal anyway. EFI on the Windows side looks exactly the same as BIOS anyway.

agreed, but overclocking is really easy inside efi.

I don't think I will be wanting sandy bridge. don't have the cash right now. which means i have to use bios i take it?

Sandy Bridge hardware will be around the same price current processors and motherboards are, so you'd be better off waiting.

I like the sound of that, also means I'll have more cash at the time.
But I will have to wait until a Mac with sandy bridge is launched for the updated kernel right?

So what hardware would you guys recommend?

EFI has been on boards since the Pentium 4. It just depends on which board you buy. It's been on PC's for a long time.

But again, it makes no difference for overclocking. If you are buying a Windows machine, it makes no difference if you use BIOS or EFI.

If anything, my PC overclocked WORSE when I switched to an EFI board.

i wouldnt try it until Apple releases Sandy Bridge processors in their Macs and so the vanilla kernel supports them. right now people have hacks working on Sandy Bridge, but they are using hacked kernels, so it isnt fully compatible.

I'm pretty sure MBPs will be updated between February and March, the CPUs will be available by then and it would follow Apple's normal update cycle.

OP, beware the mobo price hike

and what do you think the appropriate action would be? - i'm sure other mobo manufactures are going to increase prices too, if nothing else to gain extra profit.

Well, if you want to save some money, get the mobo ASAP. On the other hand, 10% increase is most like 5-15$ on average mobo so not that huge deal but if you're getting high-end stuff, then 10-20% increase starts to hurt. I'm just warning, nothing more.

mah, thats nothing.
how are things going to be with mobos with usb 3.0?

Just finished building one myself with the following:
Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD5
i7 970
EVGA GTX 460
6GB Dominator 1600 RAM

Boots without a problem & after a few tweaks it is stable.

how is everything? how much did the parts cost you?
hos is sleep?

Nice machine Gman. I've got the EX58-UD5 - one of the best boards for using on a hackintosh, and it's great. I'm running with an i7-930, ATI 4890, and 6 GB of Patriot RAM.

mulo: just the processor and motherboard would have cost him over $1,000. ;)

Long list of parts.......I got various deals on certain items but all together I hit the $1900 mark.
