I would also go with the 7200Rpm!! its a great speed increase cmpared to the 5400 ones! you won't belive your eyes, its a huuuge difference!

Also the 500Gb 7200Rpm's should be out pretty soon (like 1st quart of 09) thats what i am geeting

any idea on the price range for the 500 7200?

hard to say, I would say that prcies will drop a bit (they always do when someting new comes out) so I would say, not more than maybe 150$ they won't be Over expensive..... At least I hope so

And If you don't need 500Gb of space, still wait until those come out so the 320gb Version will drop in price!

ok im gonna get a 500 gig one

anyone have ideas on if wd, samsung or deagate is better? i think the samsung is 3 platter and 5 dollars cheaper. is that good or bad?

I'd go with the 500gb 5400rpm model. WD and Seagate are both great brands. Just because of features/price, in the past I've tended to go with WD for desktops and seagates for laptops, no failures with either drives.

"Egads?" Have you been watching The Music Man? :)

For me, Samsung all the way. Haven't had one fail yet and I cannot say that for Western Digital (0/3) or Seagate (4/5). The Seagate and Samsung are 3-platter (167 gb each), the WD is 2-platter (250 gb each) and will give a bit better performance.

I got my 320GB 7200rpm drive recently for <$70. The prices on these tanked.

Now 500GB 7200rpm (Seagate 7200.3) is coming out. Dell already got stock so it should be for sale by itself soon.

haha its a cool word!

yea ive had a wd fail on me as well. however, i know some swear by them. is the 2 platter that much better than a 3 platter? if not, ill just go with the samsung as its cheaper

I would take a Samsung over WD any day of the week. I have had several WD disasters and never a Samsung failure.
