eGPU thunderbolt 1 with different connection?

I know that TB1 does not support 4K and even it does, it works at 4K 30hz.

Someone told me that there is a difference between 2 methods of connection:

1. TB to the laptop directly.
2. A laptop to TB, TB to monitor with Displayport.

With method 2, even with TB1, you can play 4K 60hz without any issues base on what he said.

But is it true? Im not talking about TB 2 or 3 but Im curious to know the difference between 2 methods.
