Ejecting external drives

Hey guys, i'm currently running mountain lion and was wondering is there an app that can auto eject my external harddrive when my macbook pro goes to sleep because i hate having to eject it before i close my laptop lid. Also, would it be safe to have vmware fusion, located in the external drive, running and then close the lid on my macbook. I haven't tried it before because i'm scared it might damage my drive.

why do you think you need to eject external drives? As long as you don't physically pull the plug there's no problem.

I have a MBP that I hook up to external firewire and I let it sleep often or close the lid; no problems with the external drive.
