Ejecting internal hard drive

If you click and drag the internal hard drive, the trash turns into the eject button. Are you actually able to eject this? If so, what happens when you do?

Assuming you are booted from this drive then you can not eject the disk as it is in use. When i try nothing actually happens.

If you are booted from an external then it is possible to eject the internal drive. Just like any external drive.
