I've heard some Mac users have reverted back to mountain lion, which is still available from Apple for $19.99. These users typically have a MBP with a hard drive and non-retina screen... Typically model years 2009-2012. Anyone share an experience if you have done so? Reasons why, etc.

I did this for a couple of hours on my friend's 2010 MacBook Pro 13'' when I was testing some legacy plugins in a proprietary piece of software. ML is much faster than El Capitan with 4GB RAM and an HDD, but El Capitan blows it out of the water once the RAM is upgraded. An SSD is icing on the cake. Personally, the lowest OS I'd run in 2016 would be Mavericks, and even that's not going to be supported come 10.12...
