El Captain hookup to iPad ios10

I am trying to connect to my iPad via Connect to server (command k)

on MacMini / usb / lightning / iPad

...I used to get in about every 3rd try...tried things like rebooting, etc to gain access...

Now I can't connect...

I can ping iPad and all is good...
