Electric clippers tapered guides

Ok so every so often I cut my hair nice and short with my electric clippers. Included with the electric clippers were two 'tapered' (one left and one right) add-on guides for the clipper.

What are these for? Where/how do you use them?

Mine are labeled "Left Ear" and "Right Ear" if that gives you any ideas...
