Maybe this is common knowledge, but I spent a few frustrating days a couple months back to add my electronic signature to the Preview app, so I could sign legal .pdf documents without having to print out/sign in ink/re-scan them.
If you go into a document opened in Preview, then hit "Show Markup Toolbar", the Electronic Signature button is about in the middle. I seem to remember that I could either "sign" on my trackpad, or sign on a piece of paper and take a picture via my laptop's camera. Neither method gave me a believable signature, the laptop camera method was particularly frustrating, and I gave up.
Today I saw a short ewetube video on how to do it, and there's a couple features that I "think" may have been added, I don't remember them from a couple months ago. If, in Preview, you hit Annotate > Signature > Create Signature, you now get "Trackpad/Camera/iPhone or iPad" tabs at the top, something I don't remember. I hit "iPhone or iPad", selected iPhone, and a signature line appeared on my phone! I tried to sign my name, first with my Apple Pencil, then my rubber-tipped stylus (I have "zombie finger"), then with my actual finger; none of them worked (my iPhone is an older v2 SE). I went back in and selected iPad, the signature line showed up, and I was able to capture a decent* signature with my iPad and Apple Pencil, finally! It's now stored on my iCloud account.
So, I hope this helps anyone who's had similar difficulties; I'm thinking this is an added feature to the latest MacOS/iOS updates that wasn't advertised.
* One thing I've noticed, after five years of retirement, is my ability to write in Cursive has mostly died, I can't hand-write legibly to save my soul. Back when I was working I had anywhere from two to nine meetings a day, and was constantly scribbling notes down. It's a skill that needs to be practiced (NOT like riding a bike!)
