I'm in the market for a new stand for my MacBook Pro. I'm a Computer Science major and find myself constantly compiling one thing or another. My MacBook Pro is used on my desk at home and I've noticed that it can get very hot during compiles. I was wondering which stand, the Elevator or the mStand, would allow for better heat dissipation.

My initial thought is that the Elevator would dissipate heat the best as it exposes more of the MacBook Pro to open air and can help to promote better air circulation. Where as the mStand covers a portion of the bottom of the MacBook Pro.

I've also considered the iLap, but since it leaves even less of the MacBook Pro open to the air, I figured that it would provide the worst heat dissipation out of the three.

If there is another stand that may suit my needs, please let me know.

Thank you in advance,
Justin

I personally use the Elevator and have witnessed 7-10C drops in temps. I use an Apple KB since its not a good idea to type on the notebook when on an Elevator.

If you plan on typing on the laptop, you can try Targus's X-stand. It's nice and portable, too. I use it when I travel.

Thanks for your input. I have no intentions of typing on my MacBook Pro while it's on the stand, I have a bluetooth keyboard and mouse that I use with it.

I ordered an mStand over 6 weeks ago & it still hasn't arrived . Although the guy at the apple store said it had something to do with it coming from half-way across the world .

I chose it because IMO it matches my MBP better

Have an iLap and unable to compare the temps against the others but it does a great job. Love the ability to take off the pads and using it on the desk or with pads on my lap.

Have you tried smcFanControl? I use it and is a great way to keep your MBP cool.

I don't own any of them, but I like the mStand more. It looks better and stable.

Two thumbs up for the Elevator. I use mine all day at work and it keeps the MBP nice 'n' cool.

I spoke to the Apple Store guy about the m-stand (which he was using) and he said it was more fashion than function.

I use the elevator and think it's great. In terms of just heat dissipation I absolutely think the computer will stay cooler on the elevator versus the mStand because it exposes more of the computer to the air. However, if you are interested in a stand that keeps the computer the coolest you might want to look into the ones that have fans built in, I hear those do amazing things for cooling off the computer.

While the mStand looks nice, the elevator also perfectly matches the brushed metal of the macbook pro. I also like the angle it puts the computer at, I feel like the angle of the mStand is really extreme (not worried that the screen wont tilt that far, just think it looks weird). I haven't regretted my elevator stand purchase once since I got it.
