I did a quick look on the net and though reported elsewhere it seems no one can say what they did. Apple says its moving what they did to a 3rd party in southern California. Maybe a call center?

That is an assembly plant (also called LAguna) for PowerMac towers (including G5) and CRT all-in ones (eMac, old iMac).
235 layoffs would not equate to a plant shutdown. For example, last summer they added 800 temps there, and its staffing has historically been in the 1000-2000 range.
Possibilities for the shuffle include products that have passed peak demand, new models, or even making space to accommodate increased demands (mini for example). Completion of the eMac refresh would be the most likely explanation, though.
I saw something about this on the news when I was getting dinner. I want to say this plant has been there over 10 years. This is the 2nd computer manufacturing plant to close in this region within the past five or six years. The other? Packard Bell, which barely qualified as a computer.
nice link thanks, looks like our govt is doing nothing to encourage corporations to stay in America but doing everything to get them to fire Americans and move. Ross Perot said that after Nafta there would be a large Sucking sound as all the jobs go elsewhere. He was right. I dont Blame Apple but I do Blame our Govt for making it to darn costly to produce anything in America. just another example of crazy govt policies that does little to employee American workers. this sucks.jasylonian said:
maybe i should've made myself clearer. i think the jobs are going to a factory in Southern California that is run by a Taiwanese company. therefore, it is unfortunate for Sacramento residents, but domestically it is a wash.
NAFTA also has nothing to do with the current sucking sound that we hear because all the countries involved are losing jobs overseas, including Mexico (where it hurts, a lot). while the loss of jobs due to international outsourcing is generally considered a bad thing, the long-term implications are generally a higher national income as Americans: 1) get things cheaper and 2) become more educated so that they can perform higher wage jobs.
We had a recession... it happens. as convenient as it is to blame the government for everything bad that happens, 9/11, accounting scandals, and the bursting of the silicon valley bubble have done nothing to help the situation. however, there is a light at the end of the tunnel, as evidenced by the 300,000+ nonfarm jobs created in the last month within the U.S and the fear of rising interest rates.

this kinda makes sense a ton of machines we have been ordering lately have been shipped from tawain and its been that way for months. Maybe this is also why they dont want to "disclose" the new location probably because there isn't one

If the "old candy colored iMacs" are being discontinued for the newer "swiveling gooseneck" style I can't understand why they can't just "retool" the factory, and keep on plugging, but as so often stated it all comes down to $$$$$
