Hey folks,

After much patience I have finally scored a 1.42GHz eMac from eBay, which is the fastest model available.

Unfortunately the seller did not disclose that there is a series of scratches in the CRT.

I actually have another eMac (which this one is replacing), and now I'm curious if I can swap the CRT and / or swap the electronics between them, to end up with a fast eMac with a good CRT and a slow eMac with a scratched CRT.

Any eMac surgeons out there who can chime in?

How deep are the scratches? They may be lessened or completely removed with a new polarizer filter. I don't remember the exact kind, but an automotive polarizer works on CRTs. Scrubbing with alcohol should remove the old one (hence why you're not supposed to use glass cleaners).

Ah perfect, just the kind of experience I was hoping to hear about. Do you remember specifically which generation of boards are swappable? All of them?

They should all work without issue. I swapped a 1.42 (what I'd call a "2nd gen board") with a 1.00 (what I'd call a "1st gen board") and it just works.

Hello, experienced eMac surgeon here.
You can swap CRTs between ATI, USB2, and 2005 models. Unfortunately the original 2002 model is internally different.
If you want to buy a new CRT assembly, DV warehouse sells refurbished units:
This is the one you need. I might pick one of these up myself someday.

Also, while you're at it, if you feel confident enough you can overclock to 1.92GHz. The 2005 eMac does it very well and I've had no issues with my particular unit which I've had for a couple years by now.
