I went to fire up emacs today and received the following message:

PHP:
emacs: child exited with status 1

I went ahead and cleared out my .profile file, thinking that it might have been the source of the problem, but it still returns the error.

I searched around on Google for a bit, but didn't find much. Anyone have any ideas? I'm on a Macbook Pro Core2Duo running 10.4.9, if that helps.

Install Fink and use XEmacs, which is better than any plain Emacs.

Did emacs ever work for you on that Mac? You're talking about the implementation of emacs that's included as part of OS X, correct?

I -think- it worked at one point on this machine. I'm referring to the emacs that comes with OSX. I suppose I could archive and install to try to fix it, but I'll take a look at some of the alternatives that you linked instead, since I -really- don't want to reinstall.
