AppleInsider has noted that Apple has dropped several internation distributors of Emagic's Logic:
Emagic--creator of the Logic music production software suite--was purchased by Apple for a rumored $30 million in 2001, and has since operated as a wholly owned subsidiary of the computer company.

Frustrated by the most recent move, some former international Emagic distributors are crying foul play. They claim that the Xskey--once used to protect Logic applications from piracy--is now being abused by Apple to solicit customer information to the exclusion of the ex-distributors and dealers; the same people who previously made their living selling and supporting the software.

Dealers also fear that Apple may exploit some of the customer information once provided innocently to Emagic through it's Germany-based website. Armed with this data and the power to require additional customer info through future releases of Logic, dealers claim that Apple will soon be capable of dominating the software side of the global music production industry.

According to AppleInsider, Apple filed for a trademark on the name 'ProBand' suggesting a professional-end version of GarageBand, currently an iApp bundled with iLife 04. The underpinnings of GarageBand and Logic are fairly similar, and begs the question if Apple is planning to rebadge Logic as ProBand, anApple-branded pro audio app. According to the filing, Apple describes ProBand as "Computer Software."

It should be noted...

AI posted their story on Wednesday, September 15, 2004. I thought I had already linked it and discussion was going, but apparently never did. My apologies... :)

Page 2 because I don't know much more than what AI has said. But it seems like a likely step to take, and in fact, I'm a bit suprised that Logic hasn't been rebranded as an Apple pro app yet.

I'd be surprised if ProBand = Logic

Sure it has: "Logic Pro." I'd be surprised if Logic Pro was rebranded "ProBand." First, there is enormous brand recognition with the "Logic" name; second, "ProBand" may not appeal to the pro market: it's cheesy and "bands" are not the only users of this (excellent) software.

I'm a bit fuzzy on what Apple's being called up on as 'foul'. Are they harvesting and selling customer info? That doesn't sounds like Apple, and I don't think that even MS would be that evil. That's AOL-style lowness!

WHAAAA!!! I wan't logic 7 NOW! :(

I feel better now. Hopefully we'll be getting a new interface. :)

I know of this application called "Photoshop" but I hardly think that people working with "photos" are the only ones that use it.

The name of a program is no indication of its quality (exlcuding winblowz!
:p )

Who cares?

Unless it can out produce and out style Digital Performer, who cares? This app might be nice but DP is where its at (for MIDI at least).

A bit of FUD methinks

I've never liked Apple's reseller tactics but distribution changes are normal when a company is bought out. This sounds like typical conspiracy theorizing by a few people on the short end of the stick who hope to incite the public to defend them. C'mon guys, this statement is so ridiculous I laughed out loud:

"dealers claim that Apple will soon be capable of dominating the software side of the global music production industry"

I hope they cut out "the middle man" ASAP, so that I can do directly business with Apple. Order updates online etc.
Especially since they simplified their product line, I don't see any reason to continue with the current distribution model.

I'm using Logic on a Mac since '93 and it's still a fabulous combo. I'm looking forward for the new version with the guitar amp, drum comp and new synth. And hopefully repolished UI ofcourse.

That may be true in the US, but not in Europe, Logic and Cubase/Nuendo outsell DP4, which is a shame.

We've just taken delivery of a few DP4 units for assesment at the Uni, we want to get off the Cubase treadmill, and DP4 is a very nice partner platform for Logic, plus our American students are usually familiar with it. We also run ProTools.

Logics interface needs a serious overhaul, I love ProTools simplicity in the two windows, but the MIDI doesn't cut it at programmer level, a Logic 7 with a reduced set of dynamic menus/windows like DVDSP3 or FCP4 would be very cool.

I think Logics handling of it suite of soft synths is better than anything on the market, and I agree that Apple would be stupid to kill such a big brand with something as crass as "Proband".

Anyone who needs to work in effectively in the industry needs to know all platforms to an extent anyway.

MacOSRumors (yes, MOSR) covered this topic nearly two weeks ago. Perhaps MOSR is becoming reliable again? :)
Or maybe things are so slow that AI are dredging for stories there too :)

i pretty much agree with everything you just said. DP4 and logic are nice, and can do alot but there interfaces need a LOT of work. Protools has the best interface but crappy midi...and i hate protools' closed platform approach.

The lay of the land for Apple music apps...

Logic Pro >> Logic Express: Audio composition and production.
GarageBand >> Soundtrack: Loop-based music production.

Apple would already seem to have two "sets" of audio tools, since GarageBand is clearly a slightly stepped-down version of Soundtrack. But GarageBand is marketed to musicians -- Steve Jobs said in the keynote announcing it that there's a musician in more than half of American households -- and I suspect ProBand will be marketed to musicians as well.

I suspect it's a live-performance tool, i.e., a soundboard application for performances. It would have the capability to supplement instrumentation with loops (like GarageBand) but would be more oriented toward multiple live instruments.

I'm guessing october will bring fruits of Logic 7 pro....

they may have just patented it to make sure no noe else used the name... i cant see it fitting into the line-up of music apps

ever since apple bought emagic i've been waiting for a huge change. As of now i'm a digital performer user, but if logic 7, or proband turns out to be the greatest thing since the waffle iron then i may be switching.

That's my vote too. Trademark ProBand so that no one else can use it as a rip of GarageBand.

I really dont see the point in re naming logic to pro band yes its used by pro bands and things but logic in my opinion sounds a lot more pro than pro band maybe its just me ... i doubt we would see logic change name and proband will probaly as many have said before be a much more advanced garage band app for those of us who have grown out of gb and need somthing more but no were near as powerfull as the logic collection of software ...

Just my opinion and thoughts on this
