I noticed recently that my email is always logged-into on my macbook air, even if I log out. It has happened in the past month or so. For my gmail, it is not logged into, but my username is always posted. Recently, my hotmail is just open and logged into. My understanding, with mac, was that you didn't need a firewall, or antivirus software. Could this be something I have downloaded? Thanks.

It's not a bug or malware, that's just how web browsers work. Safari -> Preferences -> Security -> Show Cookies -> Remove All will log you out of all sites.
