Email button starts to download messages then goes back to homescreen

When I push the email button at the bottom of the home screen it starts to download my messages and then for some unknown reason after less than 2 seconds it goes back to the home screen.
How can I fix this ?
I did shut the phone down and restarted it. Took off all apps that I do not need. This did not work.
A couple of days ago I updated the phone to the new 3.1.3
Please help because I need to look at this email while I am at work and send and receive emails all day long.
