Email: "Filter Junk Mail Before Applying my Rules"

Ok.....under preferences is it good to put a check for "Filter Junk Mail Before Applying my Rules" ??

I hate junk mail, but I was still confused by this sentence. Is it better to filter junk mail before applying my rules to move my emails to their sorted folders?....OR......is it better to apply rules before filtering my junk mail?

Just look under preferences > security and look for that check box and you will see what I mean.

Is it better to check or not check the box?
